We are pleased to introduce you to MaggZ (she/her):

MaggZ is a Naarm-based movement and multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne, AU, specialised in waacking - a freestyle dance originated in 1970s LA from the LGBTQIA + community, predominantly involving arm movements. Traversing amongst dance battles, live performances, installations, interdisciplinary collaborations, creative directions and digital creations, MaggZ aspires to explore the possibilities of art and creativity whilst to honour the unique being of self and others.

✧ The THEME for this artist residency is Volatile - exploring processes of rapid deterioration and the return to homeostasis. The theme emerges from the experience of being in isolation during the pandemic of COVID-19, when humankind went through both internal and external turmoil as a collective, in the cycle of volatility - from initial decline, through deterioration, to peak deterioration before a return to homeostasis. Ionization prompts the question of how volatility can ultimately drive us towards a realization within: what is aliveness? How do we adapt and progress with such aliveness? And how do we identify our roles in combating systemic injustices that are perpetuated in vicious cycles?

This residency responds to the idea of Volatile - firstly, to examine the interconnections between art and social justice discourse, to create space for open dialogues for challenging conversations; secondly, to investigate the balances between rational and emotional approaches in healing traumas.

✧ Maggz is looking for a digital/visual artist to collaborate with for the week of 8/30-9/5! This collaborative project will be showcased through our site and issue three (coming soon!). “In ‘deterioration,’ reflection is found. Reflection is key to attaining self-discovery. This process can take quite a lot of time as one may not see what is causing the deterioration in the first place. Once it is found, then the process of healing will take place.

Identity isn’t just based on one’s self; it is surrounded by society, culture and personal relationships. Thus, transformation and change can be intimidating because what lies on the other side is, ultimately unknown. You don’t know what you are going to be like and you also don’t know who and what will remain. The risk is inevitable because transformation is needed in order to adapt and evolve with our environment. It is a cycle — I don’t believe it will ever have an ending.”
